Nitrous oxide or no: What you need to know

Nitrous oxide or no: What you need to know

Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” has been a part of the dental community for a long time.

Used to help with pain and dental anxiety, nitrous oxide is one of the many tools dentists use to help patients. So, what is it? It’s a naturally occurring substance that is a common option for many dental procedures.

It can be used for children and adults and is usually given inhalation via a mask that fits over part of your face.

After nitrous oxide is administered, the effects fade fast after the patient stops inhaling it, meaning you can go back to your normal self more quickly.

Patients report that nitrous oxide makes them relaxed, giddy and helps them not fret over the dental procedure at hand. Side effects are uncommon and mild, although most dental professionals ask that you don’t eat for two hours before the administration of nitrous oxide.

It isn’t IV sedation, however, so you can go right back to your busy day.

For patients with dental anxiety, this can be a real benefit, allowing them to have important dental work that can relieve pain and restore smiles. It’s also good for patients who will be in the chair for a long time or who have a sensitive gag reflex. And it’s safe and can be used on children, so if you have a young child who might have a hard time sitting still or who is anxious about dental work, it could be an option. Talk to your dentist.
