Inlays/Onlays

When a large amount of the tooth’s surface is damaged and a traditional filling will not correct the issues, our dentists at Groveport Dental Group will often use an inlay or onlay to restore the damaged area back to its original shape.

An inlay, which is similar to a filling, is used inside the cusp tips of the tooth. An onlay is a more substantial reconstruction, similar to the inlay but extending out over one or more of the cusps of the tooth.

Installation of an inlay or onlay requires two appointments to complete. During the first appointment, the damaged area of the tooth is removed and an impression of the tooth is taken. While you’re waiting for your permanent inlay or onlay, a temporary will be placed on the tooth until your next appointment. At your second appointment, the temporary will be removed and a new inlay or onlay will be bonded to your tooth permanently.
