How to help your kids have good oral habits (and avoid fillings!)

Good oral habits start young, so if you have children, you probably already work with them to brush and floss – to avoid the dreaded fillings.

While brushing and flossing are great – and something you should do daily! – helping kids have good oral habits is more than just about preventing fillings.

By giving your kids good oral habits, you set them up for a lifetime of health. While no one wants fillings, when you help your kids learn good oral habits you are teaching them to invest in their overall wellness – something that will follow them into adulthood.

So, how do you help your children avoid fillings and have good oral habits? Read on:

Baby teeth

While you might think you don’t need to take care of baby teeth, you do! Yes, baby teeth are lost but decay in them can affect permanent teeth and lead to problems down the road. So start young! (And yes, sometimes we do fillings in baby teeth!)

Routine

If you have good oral habits, show your children that by introducing them to your daily brushing and flossing routine. Morning and evening or even mid-day, when you brush and floss, take your children with you so they can see – and participate.

You should brush your child’s teeth as soon as she gets her first tooth!

Avoid sugar

Cutting or limiting sugar consumption is a good healthy habit for parents to pass on to their children. The fact is, sugar can cause dental issues – including fillings. So, limit it – especially after teeth are brushed.

Regular checkups

In our busy lives, it can be easy to skip regular dental checkups. But they are key to maintaining oral health, so schedule them in twice a year! By going to the dentist twice a year, you might be able to avoid fillings.
